Biographical Sketch
Bezalel Schatz was born In 1912 in Jerusalem, into a family of artists. His father, Professor Boris Schatz, was the founder of Palestine's Art movement, and the creator of the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem. His mother is a well-known critic and historian in the field of Art, while his sister has won acclaim for her work in sculpture, painting and design in plastic. Schatz's early training was received at his father's school where, at the age of fourteen, he held his first exhibit. In 1930 he came with his father to the United States for a tour of joint exhibits, and in 1932 left for Paris where he worked for the next four years. The Paris sojourn saw the development of Schatz from the classical style in which he had been steeped since childhood to Expressionism, and from Expressionism to the style which now characterizes all his work. While in Paris he exhibited at the Galerie Rive Gauche.
Following World War II, Schatz devoted two years to the designing and printing on a silk screen medium of Henry Miller's book "Into the Night Life." The book, together with the original sketches, has been exhibited at San Francisco, London, Munich and Paris, and has excited international enthusiasm in the field of art criticism as one of the most important contributions to modern book making.
Schatz has lived for the past three years at Big Sur in California where he arrived at a point of maturity far beyond that displayed in any of his previous work. The paintings on exhibition at the Bodley Gallery are chiefly the work of this California period; some of the original illustrations for"Into the Night Life" are also Included.
Schatz has previously exhibited in New York in 1941 at the Carroll Carstairs Gallery.
Following the present exhibit, Schatz plans to leave for Paris and eventually return to his home in Jerusalem, Israel.
